People come to know their worlds not only by directly experiencing and interacting with their physical environments, but also by using spatial-graphic representations of those environments. In this presentation, I will discuss research on children’s developing understanding and use of environmental representations such as maps and aerial photographs; the role of individuals’ developing logical, symbolic, and spatial concepts; and the mechanisms that may foster progressive change.
