Timothy Bunnell
Dr. Bunnell's work is on speech analysis, speech processing, and speech synthesis to aid persons with speech and hearing-related disabilities. The ModelTalker project is directed toward the development of high quality text to speech synthesis using natural speech (primarily diphone) concatenation units. The STAR (Speech Training, Assessment, and Remediation) project aims to develop a video game like speech training system which uses speech recognition to assess the speech of young children and animated cartoon characters to provide feedback and keep children involved in the game. Much of this work is heavily application oriented and uses established speech processing methods in new applications. However, basic research on how speech is related to the cognitive faculties in areas like speech disorders, speech perception, acoustic phonetics, and speech processing remains an important component of the work in the Speech Research Lab.
