Sandra Carberry
Dr. Carberry's research interests fall broadly into the areas of artificial intelligence, natural language processing, and user modeling. More specifically, her research focuses on discourse and dialogue understanding, response generation, plan recognition, interactive dialogue systems, summarization, and digital libraries. Further information can be found at Interests She have recently been investigating broader categories of communication than just utterances, with an emphasis on information graphics (non-pictorial graphics such as bar charts and line graphs). Most information graphics that appear in newspapers, magazines, and formal reports have a message that the graphic designer intends to convey. Current projects include:
  • Recognizing the message conveyed by an information graphic. This project adopts Stanford psychologist Herb Clark's view that language is not just words but is instead any signal that is intended to convey a message. In this work, she extends plan recognition, user modeling, and language understanding to information graphics (non-pictorial graphics such as bar charts and line graphs).
  • Summarization, indexing, and retrieval of information graphics in a digital library Digital Libraries
  • Assistive technology in the form of an interactive natural language system that will provide access to the content of information graphics for individuals with sight impairments. Intelligent Interfaces
  • An intractive graphic design assistant that will help graphic designers construct graphics that convey their intended messages.
